- Trim the candle wick down before lighting it each time. Ideally, the wick should be about 0.5 cm lenght. You can use regular scissors, and if the wick is too deep, it is good to use special candle scissors (available soon). The right length of a wick will allow you to enjoy a candle longer and will help you to avoid too large candle flame. Why is it better to trim a wick before lighting a candle and not right after doing it? If the wax solidifies, even if the wick tip falls to the bottom, it won't melt with the rest of it. Also pay attention to the fact that the wick should be straight and in the center of the candle - if it tilts straighten it while the wax is still melted.
- Let the wax dissolve over the entire surface, especially for the first time (leave a gap of 0.5-1 cm from the edge on openwork and lantern candles). The best way is to take an hour of the candle burning time for every 2.5 cm of diameter/width of the candle. Wax has its "memory", so your candle will always melt as it did for the first time. It means, that if you won't give it enough time, a narrow tunnel will form in a middle of it. If you are reading this and the tunnel has already formed, nothing is lost yet. If the tunnel is not too big, you can burn the candle longer next time and the sidewalls will dissolve.
- Put out the candle in the right way. The best way for putting out candles is a fire extinguisher, but you can also use a lid for putting out candles in a vessel - this will cut off the oxygen. This way you will avoid smoldering of the wick - sometimes it may burn out completely. Besides, you will get rid of the unpleasant smell while extinguishing the flame.
- Avoid placing candles in areas with drafts or open windows - it is better to let the scent remain in the room :-) This is especially important for free-standing candles - thanks to this, the candles will burn evenly.
- Last but not least - safety. Do not burn the candle for more than 4 hours at a time. It is best to use an hour of burning for each 2.5 cm of diameter/width of a candle. Otherwise your wick may be too long and the flame too great. This may cause the candle to burn unevenly. Don't let all the wax in the vessel dissolve. This is very important - the heated glass may break or the wick may drown. Put the candle on the stand in a safe place. Do not leave a candle unattended for longer periods of time.
And remember - these are just tips (apart from safety precautions - it is better not to underestimate them :-) ). Even if you have been doing something not quite right so far, it doesn't mean you have been doing it wrong - as long as you enjoy burning the candles.
We also encourage you to give candle vessels a second life. The vessels can be also used as containers after firing and washing them up. You can also send them back to us. For each jar, you will receive a voucher to use in our store. Don't forget to include your e-mail address.
